Rated R is the fourth upcoming studio album by Bajan R&B singer Rihanna set to be released November 23, 2009. The album's first single, "Russian Roulette", written by Ne-Yo and Rihanna, was released on October 20, 2009.The album is scheduled to be released November 23, 2009 in North America and United Kingdom. On October 15, 2009, Rihanna released a statement along with a picture on her official websites saying: "The Wait is Ova. Nov 23 09". The picture with the brief note showed a metallic 'R'. Later on in the week, an uncommented countdown clock on Rihanna's website appeared, the first single from the album was released October 20, 2009. Rihanna is set to perform during a three-night preview voyage on the Oasis of the Seas, the world's largest cruise ship, on November 19, 2009. She will also perform at the 2009 American Music Awards, the day before the album is released, on November 22, 2009.
On November 16, 2009, a week before of the release of Rated R, Rihanna performed at the Brixton Academy in London. She promoted her upcoming album by singing 3 new tracks and revamping old hits like Take A Bow, Disturbia and Umbrella , giving them an edgier, rockier feel. The event was also in aid of Nokia X6 and was streamed live online on the Nokia website.
"Russian Roulette", the first single, was released on November 3, 2009 in the United States, and November 23, 2009 in United Kingdom. "Russian Roulette" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number one-hundred. So far, after three weeks on the chart it has reached number 9 - giving Rihanna her twelfth top 10 single of her career. The song has also reached inside the top ten on 8 other charts including gaining her first number one on the Norwegian Singles Chart for the song. The music video was released on Friday, November 13, 2009.
"Hard", the second single, was released on November 10, 2009 in the United States via Urban and Rhythmic radio. The song features Young Jeezy, and was sent to Hot 97 by Def Jam on November 2, 2009. The single cover was released on November 10, 2009. The video has yet to be shot. It has so far reached number 41 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs without physically being released.

Eventually, however, the label chose "Hard" as the second single instead. Rihanna was spotted filming the music video for the song on October 16, 2009. The official single cover was released on November 7, 2009 featuring Rihanna partially nude as on "Russian Roulette" and "Hard". The video has started to receive airplay on UK music channels in the week starting 8 November. It was confirmed on BBC Radio 1 that it would be released as the second single in the UK in early 2010.
